The Vocational department focuses on helping clients develop greater understanding of the impact brain injury can have on work related skills. It aims to help clients consider and explore vocational options more objectively and realistically. It encourages clients to take increasing responsibility towards their own rehabilitation and independence. The expectation of a mature and responsible approach is fundamental if a return to the workplace or re-training is to be a realistic, achievable and sustainable option.
Clients work on reducing the impact of disability, dependency on others and increasing independence, awareness and insight into how their difficulties impact in the workplace. Clients work on exploring and developing strategies to compensate for their difficulties. They also work on developing strategies, functional skills, confidence, insight, attention, stamina and the ability to work and communicate effectively with others.
The Vocational Department provides independent and group sessions including Independent Studies, Group projects, Workplace Study Group, Future Planning, Job search and Work Experience placements where appropriate.
It is also important that clients have the opportunity to explore, consider and recognise realistic vocational options/opportunities and this may mean re-adjusting plans or letting go of unrealistic expectations to achieve a positive outcome.
The Vocational department is both pro-active and reactive, recognizing the importance of identifying areas of need and development and acting upon these positively.
The department also assists those already in employment but who are experiencing difficulty with work retention following acquired brain injury. The department continues to develop this much needed service and has achieved a high level of positive outcomes.
