After an acquired brain injury, it may be necessary to re-learn basic educational skills that have been lost, or to learn new skills in order to adjust to difficulties. Loss of memory, loss of language, difficulty with attention, perception, cognitive organisation and reasoning all contribute to problems with maintaining and using knowledge and acquiring new learning.
The aim of the Education Department is to provide assessment of key educational skills and to devise individual learning programmes relevant to identified needs. These programmes are designed to enable clients to achieve their own identified goals. The most effective methods for learning are implemented and clients' achievements are carefully monitored and recorded so that progression is evident. Access to the programme is provided through the identification and teaching of technology for those who need it due to physical, sensory and specific learning difficulties. A range of specialist or adapted hardware, software, high and low technology aids and furniture creates opportunities for training, education, personal development and leisure.
The staff in the Education Department work closely with the therapists to identify and implement systems and strategies to compensate for lost abilities and to ensure a holistic approach to each individual's programme.
