Creative Therapy enables clients to access experiences through sight, sound, touch and movement. To have the opportunity to express ideas and feelings in a creative environment can be very important for people experiencing the restricting effects of brain injury. Within all the creative activities, different elements of cognitive, practical and emotional needs are explored. The Department aims to combine the range of skills needed to enhance clients' confidence, self-esteem and abilities in a therapeutic setting.
Drama Therapy
Personal issues are addressed through role play, myth, legend and stories. Symbols and actions conveyed in this way can have a significant individual meaning for clients. This offers an opportunity to release tensions and ideas. Interactions in a group or during individual sessions can create insight and facilitates understanding of and adjustment to specific life events.
Art Therapy
Making images using art materials can be a beneficial way of communicating thought and feelings non-verbally. Discovering ways for clients to manipulate materials, reflect upon ideas and to create their own range of marks and symbols is a method which enables them to gain personal insight and emotional support.
Finding a unique form of creative expression can be important to clients experiencing transition during different stages of rehabilitation. The development of personal interests, formation of creative problem solving techniques, acquiring insight and discovering new skills are some of the strengths gained by those who take part in Creative Therapies.
